(Firstly apologies for the long gap of no posting, this was meant to post automatically around the middle of October but didn't and I've been very busy)


This book is the sixth of John Flanagan's "Rangers Apprentice" series, which has some of the most popular books according to the views on other reviews of books 1-5.


The story continues on from Book 5 "Sorcerer in the North" which you must read before this one, But to briefly sum up
After being sent North to investigate rumours of a Sorcerer in the border fief of Norgate Will and his friend Alyss become caught up in an attempt to overthrow the Lord of castle Macindaw .by the traitor Keren. Orman the castle lord is poisoned and he and Will flee Castle Macindaw and refuge in the woods of the sorcerer Malakalam, who is in fact just a Healer called Malcolm.


So this Book, for starters the title doesn't leave much hidden really providing you read book 5 :)
Will must Discover Keren's plans,rescue Alyss and retake the castle.

Oh and they only have a few weeks before an army from Picta invade.

This brings up a whole host of problems, which is only slightly solved by the discovery of Gundar and his crew who ran aground on Norgate's coast on their journey home after "visiting" Seacliff.

And of course where would Will be without help from "Kicker and his big friend"

But they still find themselves with the problem of needing to assault a castle with only 27 men.

With only Will's ingenuity, Horace's strength and some 'black magic' from Malcolm ,they and their crew must prevail or Araluen will be torn apart by war!





I do like this book but I found myself getting slightly bored in places where there were  periods with not much happening or that was very predictable, however it is a good book and still worth reading, as is the whole series. It does conclude this 2 book section of the series well though.

BOOK REVIEW: The Dead (Charlie Higson)

Book: The Dead

Author:Charlie Higson

In the second book of the series Higson brings us back in time to a year or so before the events in "The Enemy".

Best friends Ed and Jack are part of a group of boys barricaded in their school building fighting off the teachers trying to eat them,
As they are slowly forced backwards, lashing out at the Sickos who try and swamp them they realise they can no longer stay here,
Things get worse as they retreat into a room with only one exit that the boys all are sheltered in, they must hold off until sunrise but they cannot survive another night there, it's just a matter of time.

The next morning the survivors decide to leave and try to find safety and other kids, leaving the school the group splits in tow, some going to London, the majority going for the countryside.

The group heading for the countryside is ambushed but saved by an adult and his son in a bus, and he's not infected!

Greg is a rough bloke with little respect for anyone but he can drive the bus and is the only non infected adult. how is he staying healthy?

He drives them to London, picking up the others on the way,


However when they arrive they start to realise Greg isn't as healthy as he's been leading them to believe.


Now the Kids face the challenge of surviving in London, with the diseased people all around, they must find somewhere safe.


London is full of kids scattered around in groups trying to survive, and adults trying to eat them,
 but as flames slowly burn through the city can the kids all escape to new safe spots, or will they fight amongst themselves and be eaten by the adults,

And in the chaos and fighting can they stay together?







I really like this book and I'm not entirely sure this review gives it a good telling,
written as a prequel to The Enemy(which is reviewed on this site also) it follows a different group and helps explain and introduce various situations in the 1st book.
I enjoyed reading the first book and this one as I think Higson does a good job writing a gripping story about a topic that is fairly common to find and read about.

BOOK REVIEW: The Power Of Six(Pittacus Lore)

The sequel to "I am Number Four" this book continues the story and it is getting much better.

The surviving members of the Garde of Lorien ,hiding on planet Earth, are finally gaining their legacies and finding each other, But their emerging powers only make the Mogadorians more intent on finding and killing them before they are powerful enough to confront them.

(I will state early on that you pretty much have to read the first book "I am Number Four" before reading this one as there's little repeated explanations. find my review of it here:

Continuing from the previous book, John(Four),Six and their human friend Sam are on the run across America following the attack on the town of Paradise by the Mogadorians. Both their Cepans are dead and they are now labelled terrorists by the Government.


Meanwhile on another continent number 7 is stuck in a religious house, her chest hidden, her Cepan blinded from her duties in her new life, How long is it until the Mogadorians find them, she must convince Adelina to move on.

A mysterious girl arrives at the convent place Seven is at but so do the first signs of Mogadorians in the area and Seven must get her chest open and convince Adelina to leave.



This book is actually rather hard to review as the story,as brilliant as it is, is extremely complex and jumps a lot, so I'll do my best but it may not be up to my usual standard (but the fact the story is hard to review isn't a bad thing in this case)

Four,Six and Sam return to paradise to follow a clue left by Sam's father who was kidnapped by the mogs years ago. Despite the danger Sam and John visit Sarah's house and get captured by the FBI while Six is left behind fighting Mogadorians who have stolen Johns chest.

Escaping from the FBI  they hear news of trouble and magic in Spain where number 7 is. They decide to split up.



The story then becomes less jumpy and has longer sections for each part.

John,Sam and Bernie head off to the Mogadorian base to get the chest back, using shared power of invisibility due to one of the strange stones, they sneak in and find the chests n the rooms with the Pikens-beasts ofMmogadore 30 feet tall, as they exited the cage deep inside the enemy base the invisibility wares off, panic ensues but as they run the stumble across a prison in which another Loric is being held, they set him free and together the 3 of them fight their towards the exit, but will they all make it out?


Meanwhile Six had travelled to where 7 is and arrives in the middle of a pitched battle( which occurs as part of the Number 7 storyline in the constantly changing bit) Seven and the mysterious young girl who turns out to be another Loric from a second ship that escaped are fighting off swarms with the help of a Chimaera and Human allies, but can they all make it out alive?



Hopefully my comments will be more useful. Don't be put off by this review. I really like this book, and I may be making it sound more chaotic than it is. It's just so full of action and two story lines that I'd need pages to cover the middle where it does change and have a lot happening all the time.
I really liked both books and am awaiting the release of the third  in the series. I would thoroughly recommend you read it as both this and I am no.4 are great books and well worth a look at.

BOOK REVIEW: The Legend of Deathwalker (David Gemmell)

A story from the past of Druss the Legend, One of Gemmell's best characters.

In this story it starts with Druss on the walls of Dros Delnoch speaking to a fellow soldier facing Ulric and his Nadir horde( the setting of another book) and he starts telling the story of this book and thus the main story begins....
Druss is competing in a game of nations in Gulgothir as the Drenai wrestler after injuring the real one in a practise fight, he is his usual
un-defeatable self and against the odds makes it to the final. Now he is against the Gothir fighter Klay and it is set to be a contest of giants,
There's just one set back; The mad king of the Gothir has decreed that Druss will lose in a "prophecy" and if he wins it could be seen as a Drenai attempt to destabilise the Gothir nation.

Or so the Drenai diplomats tell him.

However the people behind the mad-king on the throne need to make sure that Druss loses and send armed fighters to injure or kill him outside a bar.

This plan backfires drastically when Klay witnesses the attack and gets involved to save Druss, and is badly wounded.

When news of this reaches the public all bets on the fight are cancelled and riots break out all over the city,


In the following chaos Druss learns of healing stones said to be hidden in the lands of the Nadir, only these will restore Klay, if they exist.


So Druss and his friend Sieben the poet travel to the shrine of the father of the Nadir to find the stones, but when he arrives he finds himself entangled in a battle between a few hundred nadir and a few thousand Gothir warriors trying to crush their sacred site.

and while the battle rages Druss must walk the land of Death to save spirits trapped by demons, If he wants to find the jewels on top of fighting a Gothir army that outnumbers them 100-1

Can Druss succeed?
and find out how he gets his nadir name, read it.


The twist with the combat and magic in Hell is also nice, but I don't want to spoil that for you...






I can't get enough of David Gemmell and his various books set in the same medieval land.
  This is yet another brilliant one, It's a good stand alone story but I think it would be better If you also read Legend, but either order would work, they're both about Druss.

BOOK REVIEW: Aftershock(Mark Walden) H.I.V.E

Otto Malpense is back again for another adventure at H.I.V.E ( The Higher Institute of Villainous Education) and Mark Walden has done another good job.

Dr. Nero ,the head of H.I.V.E and the leader of the Global League of Villainous Enterprises(G.L.O.V.E)
has made some very powerful enemies after his decision to disband G.L.O.V.E's ruling council after the events of Overlord in the previous books.


Meanwhile Otto and his fellow alpha students are preparing for end of year tests, including  one of the hardest assessments in H.I.V.E:
- The Hunt

An arctic survival challenge where the students must avoid Raven and a team of GLOVE agents for as long as possible.


But all at H.I.V..E is not what it seems,  somewhere there is a traitor, feeding information to the treacherous former members and the Disciples, the former followers of Overlord.

So when the Hunt is ambushed a survival exercise becomes more than a game. Otto and his friends must escape the ambush then flee through the wilderness,  the others are captured or dead,
can they make it back to HIVE alive?

Pursued, they must try to reach a safe point to call for help, but is there such a thing as a safe point when Otto knows there's a traitor in their midst?


A feature I really like about this book is that not only does it give you the main story but also little insights into Raven's training as an assassin and how she became the operative she is. There's a number of chapters dedicated to her harsh treatment and becoming the killing machine she is.






This book is good. It's what hopefully appears to be a start of a new storyline.
Mark Walden is a masterful writer of HIVE books and I have read and enjoyed all of them so far, it's not to complex to read and some of the detail is a little light in places but that's made up for because it's  full of action and suspense. The number of crisises they have and the twists and turns how can you fail to like an action book about kids learning to be villains that includes abandoned Russian military facilities in the middle of nowhere.
It doesn't require you to have read the books before but it does help you understand some of the references.

If you haven't already started reading this series then you should start now.

BOOK REVIEW: The Hunger Games (Suzanne Collins)

The Hunger games is the first book of a trilogy and as I expect many of you will know has been made into a film.


It's set in the world of Panem, a land with 12 districts ruthlessly held in check by the Capitol, after a failed revolution. The people are starving and to further punish them each year the 12 districts of Panem must offer up two tributes,one male, one female, between the ages of 12 and 18 to take part in the Hunger Games!

The Hunger Games is a forced Televised fight to the death, There can be only one winner...

 District twelve, everyone attends the reapings,  where the tributes names are drawn, and Katniss Everdeen watches in horror as her little sister Prim is chosen, she's only twelve, what chance does she have?  So Katniss does something no one has done for years, she volunteers.

She's a good hunter, and has kept her family in food for years, but that doesn't mean she has a chance.


Now her and fellow tribute Peeta have been whisked away to the Capitol, and soon the Games will begin.

In the pre-game interviews however, in a bid to win support that could be life saving Peeta announces he loves Katniss, could this be the key to success or a death sentence,

Now they must save each other as well as themselves if they want any chance to win the most deadly game of all,

On top of the usual challenges of food and avoiding other kids, districts 1 and 2 have specially trained volunteers in the game, who almost always win,

The odds are against them, can the survive against their opponents? and even more so, the games themselves?


and when the games are over, what will the Capitol do about the growing unrest in the districts?

I feel my review doesn't fully justify how engaging this book is,  I must warn you that it's very very slow to begin with and has a very detailed intro to their lives and the world of Panem, a lot like the film, I advise you stick with it thought as it gets better and better, the whole concept is great and the way it's portrayed makes you keep reading non-stop.  I thought it was a very good idea, and a great book, the only criticism is the intro, but i can understand why it's so long as it's introducing the trilogy pretty much so i guess you need the background covered well,

A good read and a good film,

BOOK REVIEW: Maximum Security(Robert Muchamore) CHERUB 3

Book: Maximum Security

James Adams returns for the third book of the CHERUB series.


In this book James must do the opposite of what most CHERUB missions do, He has to bust a criminal out of Arizona Max.

Curtis Oxford is the son of a renowned gun smuggler, locked up in Americas high security prison.

His Mother, Jane Oxford, has just stolen a truck of high-tech missiles from the American government, destined to be sent to Britain.
Britain want these missiles back, and so James and an agent called Dave moss find themselves inside Arizona max.

In the young offenders cell, nicknamed Gladiator schools, James sees brutality, from kids his own age, and he must join in if he wants to win Curtis Oxford's trust and friendship.

With murder attempts, Dave being seriously hurt and having to beat people up James's mission isn't going well,

Then when they do break out, there's just the simple matter of evading the whole Arizona police department.

Plus if they do make it to Jane Oxford, will she stick to her deal or just kill James because he knows to much? and can he find the missiles?

All this action and more in another great book by Robert Muchamore



The CHERUB series remains one of my favourite series of books,
This book is yet another great read,

I'd thoroughly recommend the CHERUB series, but I do think they nee to be read in order despite the stories being individual missions.

BOOK REVIEW: Black Out (Sam Mills)

Black Out is set in England in the near future. Books have been deemed dangerous by the State as they seem to be causing kids to commit terrorist acts.

Terrorism is the major issue at this time.The State says books have to be sweet and pleasant so they don't inspire teenagers to commit crime. Famous novels are rewritten, many are banned.
Read and banned book and you go to jail.

Stefan is the son of a bookseller. He goes to school and is baffled by the stuff they read, they don't make sense(especially when he's read bits of these books before the state rewrote them). But he has been brainwashed by the State into thinking books are evil and that it's perfectly acceptable to hold public executions of authors in the name of the war on terror.
But then he comes home one day to find a "terrorist" in his home. Omar Shakir. Sentenced to death just for writing a book with supposedly illegal content.  He is in hiding, His dad is helping them.

But that's wrong, truth to the state will set you free. At least that is the poor conclusion Stefan's indoctrinated brain comes up with. So when the Censorship pays them a visit Stefan turns them all in.

Taken to The Institution, Stefan is interrogated,some might say tortured, before being sent to live with a new family, Mr and Mrs Kelp. But they have their own plans. They are government rewriters and use him to study the effects of books that are banned.

Then Omar rescues him, but neither know he's been brain washed to kill the Words members when a trigger phrase is spoken, until it's too late.   Hated both by the State for shooting someone in public and hated by the words for killing there members Stefan is on his own.
A when he stumbles across a secret code in a book will he decipher it in time to save his father?

Read this book to find out how Stefan  struggles with conflicting thoughts and a country that wants to keep children down,



This is a great book for teenagers and upwards, it's told in an interesting story but raises some interesting points about government control and dictatorships, as well as fighting back etc. Also the idea books can control you is an interesting one.  it's a very interesting read for that aspect and the story is pretty good as well.
I'd recommend buying it just to try.

BOOK REVIEW: The Shapeshifter-Dowsing The Dead(Ali Sparkes)

I was recently looking through my book reviews and realised I'd reviewed the 1st three of this series but no more.

So here it is, The Shapeshifter book 4 - Dowsing the Dead.

This book follows on from the third with the COLA's in a new safe place, but following Gideons Sister's plan in the second book which almost eliminated them there are only 10 left. The rest had their power stolen by Catherine and only just escaped with their lives,If not their power,
Then when Gideons brother Luke sacrificed himself to save them he and Catherine were both lost to the waves and storm that claimed the COLAs home. Then in the third book they are being hunted by Catherine's spirit which tries to kill them.

And that basically brings you to this book.


In their new safe place the COLA's are no longer able to use their power outside for safety reasons.
This is no problem for most of them, except Dax, who as a shapeshifter is used to spending his time as a fox or falcon. being confined is slowly killing him. He has a stroke, and no one can work out what's wrong with their only shapeshifter, not even the healers can cure him. he is drifting in and out of consciousness and the situation is grim.

Meanwhile Lisa has her own problems. She is a physic and a medium and is trawling the land of the dead in vain trying to find the spirits of Catherine and Luke and therefore put everyone's mind at ease.


But they are not to be found there, for they are alive, although Luke is practically dead, see Catherine needs Luke's power to keep her own and keeps draining him to the point of death,

The only good news at this point is they find out how to possibly cure Dax,

To help Lisa dowse Gideon,Dax and their friend Mia a healer all join in.

And they make contact with Luke,

He is in a windmill in a French speaking country almost dead.


But when Lisa sends the government and Gideon to the wrong place it's down to Dax to fly to Luke's aid.

But he must watch his back of he'll be up and over, as he flies to the land of the pompoms according to the cryptic puzzles of a wolf spirit who occasionally appears to offer advice,

But will Dax succeed in his mission, and what will happen when the wolfs meaning comes to him to little to late?

It's no longer just Luke in danger now Dax is fighting for his life to!!!



This book is good,don't get me wrong with only giving it 6.5 . But considering how adventure-filled and gripping the first 3 were I suppose I had very high expectations for this one.  It's a good book just not as good as  the first 3 by comparison. I'm still going to read the 5th one and I hope you guys will definitely give the series a try.

This is the first book in a series Higson has written and he's made a good start


"They thought they would always protect you, You were wrong"


The Illness, The Disaster, whatever you want to call it struck, without warning.Everyone over the age of 14 got ill.

The luckier ones died... those that didn't are people no longer... They are the enemy. They are mindless creatures, with no resemblance to the humans they once were.


We join the Waitrose crew,  one of many groups of kids who have survived in a London populated by mindless Grown-ups who want to eat them.

They are fairly organised and they can fight. They can scavenge food out of the neighbourhood, But that's not enough anymore . Scavenging is becoming dangerous, grown ups are getting more daring and hungry each day.

Contending for food with grown-ups, dogs and the Morrisons crew(another group of kids) is becoming harder.
Then in one trip things change for the worse,   One of their number die, and their leader Arran is bitten.And at Waitrose itself Small Sam, a little kid, is taken.  Meanwhile at Waitrose large numbers of the mutated adults are appearing.The situation is bleak and when a random kid appear from no where offering safety it seems to good to be true.


Now they must embark on a perilous journey through London with the Morrisons crew, all on the advice of a kid in a patchwork cloak. Grown ups are everywhere,  but the promise of a safe sanctuary is worth the risk.


But not all will survive the skirmishes that errupt on their journey to Buckingham Palace and those who do may not like what they find.


Buckingham is to good to be true, few grown ups.The kids their are  organised, defended,  lead by a posh boy called David. Food is in it's multitudes.

But when asked to attack other groups of kids things start fraying, bitterness and feuds errupt and violence seems to be the predominant diplomatic tool. Can the leaders of Waitorse and Morrisons  convince the kids to do what's right not what's safe? and will  the warriors and little kids agree?  David want to rule the world, do they want to follow him?

Meanwhile Small Sam is on his own journey, having escaped his captors and avoided being eaten he will be exposed to the horror of human nature as he falls prey to non infected adults who have resorted to cannabalism  to survive. Him and a wierd kid known only as The Kid   must escape and find thier own sanctuary. In a city where even large groups struggle to survive what chance do little kids have, read to find out.




I really like this book, it doesn't use complex language so suitable for all reading abilities(although prehaps not all ages). The detail in places  is light but still grabs you.
Lots of films,books and tv shows have been made around the subjects of adults disapering, mutating ect ect. But Charlie Higson has done a masterful job that makes you want to read cover to cover non-stop. I can't wait for the rest of the series and hope they live up to the high standard set by this book.

If your a fan of adventure,mystery, with little snippets of gore and horror this book is definetly for you. and even if those aren't your areas ofinterest the way it's written and the struggle to survive in a world with no adults should make you interest.

I recommend going and buying this book if your looking for the traits listed above or just for a completely different experience.

This series shows promise and the next one is already on it's way to me. Give it a go.

and i'm very sorry about that other commitments, work and numerous other things have kept me away.
