Book: The Dead Of Night
Author: John Marsden
Rating: 7/10
Recommended ages: 11/12+
This is the second in what is appearing to be a brilliant series, unlike the 1st which was kind of just setting the scene with a little bit of action in places this one was a lot more in the way of action.
Eliie and her friends have been camped in Hell deep in the Australian outback in a daze since losing 2 of their friends to the invaders who are slowly taking control of everything they hold dear. But all it takes is one bright idea From the wild leader like Homer to re-energise them into action. Read on to find out more about the story and my opinion on it
As in the review I did of the first book in the series, which is found in this blogs archives or by following this link :http://devonianbookreviewer.blogspot.com/2011/03/book-review-tomorrow-when-war-beganjohn_03.html This series shows promise and is a very good read,
Now for some more info on the actual book:
This book is still following the 6 of them as they try to fight back against the invaders who have taken almost everything form them. This book has numerous daring ideas, attacks, concepts and more in it and I really like how the whole series so far has been written as if by one of the characters writing a record of their exploits yet still managing to keep it gripping.
It's ,like mentioned, got alot more action in it with a number of various scale tasks such as ambushing a convoy to finding a whole camp of free people in another valley, although that didn't last long as you'll find out..... It ends with a daring attempt to cause a huge amount of problems to the enemy, but you wouldn't want me to give away what it was now would you?
and the discovery of there lost friend by the river.
Buy the 1st of the series then get this book regardless of your opinions on the 1st one.
IT'S BRILLIANT

BOOK REVIEW: Tomorrow When The War Began(John Marsden) Tomorrow series book 1
Book: Tomorrow When The War Began
Author: John Marsden
Rating: 6/10- but for reasons I will explain it's still an idea to buy it as the rest of the series so far it great
Recommended age: 12/13+ for this book of the series
This book although with a low rating is a must buy as it's setting the scene for the rest of the series which so far( as i have read books 2+3 ) is going to be Brilliant.
Set in Australia and written almost like a diary or novel/recording of there exploits, it follows a group of normal kids in the rural town of Wirrawee who decide to go camping in the bush for a week over the national holiday, it all seems like a great laugh so Ellie and her 6 friends all go into the bush in a land rover full of food and other stuff for a 5 day camp. they have alot of fun and find a way down a basin of cliffs into an area the locals call Hell. Supposedly trying to find evidence of the mad hermit of Hell.
Finding a way down the cliffs using rocks set in an almost step like formation that they Can use to drop down, at the bottom they find the perfect camp, a clearing with a creek running through. the spend a few days there enjoying the peace of Hell.
But when they get back they're in for a big surprise. Everyone is missing , animals are dead and it seems that no one has made it back form the wirrawee show. what has happened?
They soon realise that their countries been invaded and a hostile force is patrolling the town whilst keeping the locals trapped in the showground. unsure of what, how or why this is happening they flee back into Hell.
As the days go by they work out what's happened and try to decide what to do they come up with 2 paths:
Give in and surrender
or
Turn Hell into a proper camp and turn into a guerrilla force and do what they Can to fight back.
I suppose there's no need saying which they chose.
This book, although abit boring in places, ends with their first attack and is a very good buy and i would definitely recommend buying it as it sets the scene for the rest of the series, which as i have already stated is brilliant so far.

BOOK REVIEW: The Horse Lord (Peter Morwood)
Book: The Horse Lord
Author: Peter Morwood
Rating: 6.5/10

Blurb:
"In the misty beginnings of time, when the horse Lords came to Alba, they defeated the master sorcerer Kalarr cu Ruruc and banished magic from their land, five hundred years later a Alban warrior called Aldric, heir to the castle of Dunrath returns from a drinking spree to find the castle sacked, his father and sisters murdered and the soldiers dead.
The sorcerer has returned for revenge."
As Aldric flees he is rescued by the retired wizard Gemmel and learns he must train for 3 long years before he's able to face his enemy. Then he must seize the dragon wand form the cavern of firedrakes defeat numerous pirates, soldiers and other foes before he Can challenge Kalarr and reclaim the citadel that is his birthright.
The wizard Gemell, a master fighter teaches Alderic all he needs to know before sending him of to get the dragon wand . using his considerable talents he bests the thief Kyrin who joins him but what are her true intentions. he frees the dragon wand and talks to a fire drake then is attacked by pirates but defeats them with a strange tactic. A trusted member f the king has an in depth knowledge of the empire the necromancer Duregar who betrayed Aldric's family and brought back Kalarr works for. Is an invasion on the horizon?
finally a force is sent to siege the castle whilst the kings gathers a main army. But they are ignorant of the sorcerers power. Suddenly Kalarr releases a most devastating spell that rips through lord santons force killing almost all.
Gemmel comes up with a plan where as Aldric can kill druegar fulfilling his oath, defeat kalarr hopefully without too many people dying.
But Will it work?
Read this books to find out. Although not the most action packed or gripping of reads it is still a fairly good story which you will hopefully enjoy no matter what age or gender you are.
